Nepal is a small country packed between
two giant countries China and India. Culturally and
religiously, it has been a very peaceful country until recently
it has broken this tradition and turned to an awful political
unrest. Despite everything, Nepal remains a land of
spirituality. The cultural and linguistic diversity in Nepal
adds to our beauty, thus making every other community an
interesting and different place. The countless number of
temples and monasteries that one can see here works as a center
of faith for all the people and is what keeps the unity of the
people intact. The two largest religions of Nepal Hinduism and
Buddhism in Nepal share a special relationship keeping away any
threat of religious tension between these two. The Lord Buddha,
a peace messenger born in the southern part of Nepal took birth
in a Hindu family.

Local Educational Projects
Jimmy is working with the some of the
poorest people in the Helambu communities to improve the
quality of education for their children. These are the
communities which are often forgotten by the government and not
reached by other supports so easily. The children attend small
local schools, without proper uniforms and without essential
supplies or a book to read. Through the project HELP- Helambu
Education and Livelihood Project- supported by the
MondoChallenge Foundation, Jimmy is working in building
classrooms, setting up libraries and supplementing with
additional teachers etc across at least 10 different local
schools impacting the lives of about 1000 children altogether.
Ensuring gender equality in education is a
vital part of our aim while working on improving the quality of
education in these schools. When I discuss the needs and ways
to resolve their problems with the local people, I use the
principles and values shared by the Children of the Earth to
respect their feelings, accept them as who they are, seek a
partnership at all levels and not to overwhelm them with the
modern thinking pattern over their traditional and cultural
values. The whole idea of this project is intended to improve
the environment of the school in which the children must grow
healthily, and improve the facility to foster their creativity.

Plans for the Future: An Educational
Center in the Mountains of Nepal
Jimmy believes that change is an attitude
and just needs people to be activated as a catalyst which is
what he is doing. He wishes to reach out to more of the similar
schools and work with the people of the communities to improve
their situation. As a home for children to foster their
creativity, learn the ways of culture of peace, practice the
values shared by COE and find an environment for their
spiritual development, Jimmy is planning for establishing an
educational center based in the mountains of Nepal in the
future.

Jimmy Lama at work with the people
“creating permanent good” in his homeland, Nepal,
“...one of the poorest countries in the world, but from
what I see .... not poor at all. Circumstances,
privilege, power, possessions, fame and position are all
temporary which comes and goes and can change anytime. So
if we are to build ourselves only on these impermanent values,
then we are just working for unreal things that may only be
good for one time or one generation.” But
“.....building respect, love, sharing leads to
ONENESS.......peace and unity.”
